Is Virginity a 'Made-Up Concept'? Planned Parenthood Video Says Yes

Planned Parenthood recently posted a sexual education video on its social media platforms claiming that virginity is a “completely made-up concept.”

The video, titled, “What is Virginity?” features a woman dressed up as a teacher in a classroom who contends that virginity was “created simply to control and shame people” and is discriminatory against people who are not heterosexual.

The women denounced virginity as “whack,” because “sex means different things to different people.”

“But where does that definition leave queer people?” she asked, adding that there are differing types of sexual engagement.

According to Faithwire, the woman also argued that there is a “double standard” when it comes to sex and virginity in relation to males and females, respectively.

“Society can put pressure on men for not having sex at the exact same time that they shame women for having it,” she explained.

“Either way, shame has no place in someone's personal decisions about sex,” the woman added.

She went on to encourage viewers to “throw away the notion of ‘losing your virginity'” and consider it as “gaining” something instead.

“Because the truth is, when we make our own decision to become sexually active, we aren't setting ourselves up to lose anything at all. We hope we are gaining things like intimacy, self insight, pleasure and empowerment.”

Rather than going by the “hurtful” myths surrounding sex and virginity, the woman said that sex is ultimately defined by the individual, regardless of their sexual experience.

“That's the beauty of your sexual journey. You're in charge, and you can figure it out on your own terms. Choosing to have sex — when, what kind, where, who with —is something that only you get to define,” she concluded.

The video has been viewed over 2 million times on X, formerly Twitter, since it was initially posted on Jan. 25.
