Rest for the One Who’s Always Needed | Your Nightly Prayer

Caregivers, parents, pastors, teachers, healthcare professionals, leaders, and helpers often become so accustomed to being the strong one that they forget they have limits too. When your days are filled with other people's needs, rest can begin to feel selfish or impossible. Yet Psalm 23 offers a very different picture of what it means to live under the care of the Good Shepherd.

In this Your Nightly Prayer devotional, Kyle Norman reflects on Psalm 23:2 and the striking image of a sheep lying down in green pastures and walking beside quiet waters. A hungry sheep normally grazes and a thirsty sheep drinks. For a sheep to lie down in abundant pasture suggests something important: its immediate needs have been met. The shepherd has provided enough that the sheep can finally stop striving and rest.

That image matters for anyone who spends life continually pouring out for others. God does not only provide strength so we can keep producing, serving, caregiving, working, or leading without end. He also leads us toward restoration. Rest is not evidence that we have failed our responsibilities. In many seasons, it is part of how God sustains us so we can continue serving with wisdom, compassion, and health rather than exhaustion and resentment.

If you're constantly needed, emotionally drained, physically weary, or approaching burnout, tonight is an invitation to let yourself be shepherded. You do not have to answer every request, solve every problem, or remain endlessly available. Ask Jesus for the courage to stop when He calls you to rest, trust that He can care for the people you cannot carry tonight, and receive His presence as something you need—not merely something you give to others.
