Presented biennially by PREA in honor of James A. Graaskamp’s pioneering contributions to real estate research and education, the award recognizes an individual whose research has meaningfully advanced the body of knowledge in institutional real estate. PREA announced the winner on October 23 rd at the 35 th Annual Institutional Investor Conference in Boston, MA.

“It is a tremendous honor to receive this award,” Roberts said. “Throughout my career, I have been committed to producing meaningful research that supports investment decision-making and deepens our collective understanding of the real estate markets. I am especially grateful to my colleagues at Crow Holdings for their ongoing support, and to the many professionals I have had the privilege to work alongside, whose influence has not only shaped my own work but also deepened my commitment to helping develop the next generation of talent in our industry.”

Roberts, who has more than 30 years of real estate experience, has served institutional clients across the globe and has played a pivotal role in mentoring the next generation of real estate researchers. At CHC, he leads the firm’s research function, producing investment outlooks that are instrumental in guiding investment decisions, while also collaborating on developing new investment strategies to meet global clients’ needs. Most recently, Roberts authored research examining the performance attributes of moderately priced rental housing, with an accompanying paper published in PREA’s special edition of the Journal of Portfolio Management.

“Mark’s recognition is a testament to the intellectual rigor, curiosity, and dedication he brings to our industry,” said Bob McClain, CEO of CHC. “His research not only advances the field of real estate investment but provides our teams and clients with the insights needed to navigate an increasingly complex and dynamic market. We are proud to celebrate this well-deserved honor and are fortunate to have Mark’s leadership and vision at Crow Holdings.”

In addition to his leadership at CHC, Roberts serves as a professor and director of research at the SMU Cox Folsom Institute for Real Estate, where he advances the next generation of real estate professionals by equipping them with insights and tools – namely the NFI-ODCE index, which he co-developed – to navigate today’s dynamic investment landscape with confidence.

“In jointly hiring Mark over three years ago, both the Folsom Institute and Crow Holdings knew that Mark was among the top minds in the real estate industry, and we are so excited to see Mark achieve this well-earned recognition,” said Joseph Cahoon, Executive Director of the Folsom Institute for Real Estate. “Our students, board members, and entire SMU community are so lucky to have his engagement and expertise both inside and outside of the classroom, and we look forward to supporting Mark’s further research efforts in the field.”

Beyond his contributions to CHC and SMU, Roberts previously served as Head of Research at Invesco, where he worked with the firm’s leadership to implement a top-down approach to complement the firm’s bottom-up expertise and enhance performance for its clients. He also led real estate, infrastructure and sustainability research at DWS (RREEF) and served Global Co-Head of Research where he oversaw the firm’s Long-Term Capital market views that were instrumental to the CIO office and guided investing across the firm.

The award recipient is chosen through a rigorous selection process that begins with PREA members submitting industry names for consideration. Former award winners then review the submissions to select the finalists, who are voted on by the full PREA membership.
