Authorities have arrested an Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office maintenance worker in connection with the escape of 10 jail inmates. Thirty-three-year-old Sterling Williams has admitted he turned the water off in a cell before the men slipped away through a hole behind the toilet early Friday. Williams told authorities an inmate threatened to stab him if he didn't help. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson last week told reporters her agency had suspended three employees pending an investigation. Four of the fugitives have been apprehended and six remain at large.
Rep. LaMonica McIver of New Jersey has been charged with assaulting and interfering with law enforcement during a visit to the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in Newark.
McIver and fellow Democrats Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman and Rob Menendez were present when ICE agents arrested Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, prompting a confrontation. McIver denies any wrongdoing, calling the charges politically motivated and part of an effort to deter congressional oversight. Body camera footage reportedly shows a crowded, chaotic scene but no clear assault by lawmakers, and House Democratic leaders say the charges are baseless.
The Trump-aligned Justice Department defended the move, while the ACLU accused it of weaponizing the legal system against political opponents.
A trespassing charge against Baraka, a gubernatorial candidate, has been dropped “for the sake of moving forward,” according to prosecutors.
President Donald Trump has announced the concept he wants for his future Golden Dome missile defense program. It would cost taxpayers tens of billions of dollars and take years to make a reality. Golden Dome for the first time will put U.S. weapons in space, which could be fired to destroy an incoming missile during flight. Pentagon planners have been developing options for the system, which a U.S. official described as medium, high and “extra high” choices based on their cost. The official says the administration picked the “high” version, with an initial cost ranging between $30 billion and $100 billion.
Senator Gary Peters, the top Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, questioned Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem about the high cost. See more on Salem News Channel.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the MAHA Commission report President Donald Trump tasked him with producing would come out on Thursday. See more on Salem News Channel.
