A Texas customer’s mailed $50 tip leaves server at a Los Angeles deli feeling appreciated. It would have been easy for Roberto Jose Andrade-Franco to shrug off the nagging thought once he was miles down the road. Instead, he listened to that little voice asking whether he had forgotten to take care of the person who had taken care of him.

The ESPN writer from Texas was in Los Angeles for work when he stopped with friends at Langer’s Deli near MacArthur Park, famous for its pastrami sandwiches. After eating, talking, and saying goodbye, Andrade-Franco got back on the road.

Texas Customer Worries He Forgot to Leave a Tip

Then came the thought. “Oh man, did I remember the tip?” he said. He couldn’t remember. And he couldn’t let it go. “It kept bothering me to the point that I just wanted to make sure I sent the tip in,” he said.

Andrade-Franco knew what being on the other side of the table felt like. He had once worked as a restaurant server himself. He understood how much those tips matter and how it feels when someone walks away without leaving one.

“I for sure didn’t want to be that person to this server,” he said. So he did something wonderfully old-fashioned. He wrote a letter, tucked a $50 bill inside, and mailed it from Texas to Langer’s Deli.

Owner Norm Langer used the clues in the letter to figure out which server had waited on Andrade-Franco’s table. “It’s something that really made me feel good,” Norm said.

The server chose not to appear on camera, but coworker Frank Worster said she deserved every bit of the unexpected kindness.

“She does so much for this place,” he said. “People come to see her for years. She’s just a great person.” No one knows whether Andrade-Franco actually forgot the original tip. But perhaps that isn’t the point; what matters is that he listened to that inner voice and did something about it. 

Unexpected Tip Makes Hardworking Server Feel Appreciated

Character often shows up in what we do when nobody is watching and when we aren’t even certain we did something wrong. A $50 bill. A stamp. A letter sent halfway across the country because one man wanted a stranger to know her work mattered. Sometimes doing the right thing is beautifully simple.
