Conservative lawmaker Jair Bolsonaro won Brazil's presidential election on Sunday, riding a wave of frustration over corruption and crime that brought a dramatic swing to the right in the country.

Reuters reports Bolsonaro won with 56 percent of the votes in the run-off election against left-wing hopeful Fernando Haddad of the Workers Party.

Bolsonaro, who has openly supported Israel, said in an acceptance speech that Brazil “cannot continue flirting with communism.”

He vowed to carry out his campaign promises to stamp out corruption after years of leftist rule.

Bolsonaro enjoyed the backing of evangelical churches in Brazil for supporting their conservative social agenda.

In his acceptance speech, he promised to govern according to the Bible and the country's constitution.
