Only 20% of Software Engineers to Fully Return to Office by 2026, ScienceSoft’s Research Shows

ScienceSoft has released new research on the future of software engineers’ work environments. The findings predict that by the end of 2025, 80% of software engineers will be working remotely, with 50% embracing hybrid work models.

The research is based on the analysis of market trends, statistical data, expert opinions, and corporate strategies of major tech companies. It shows that, despite the efforts by giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Oracle to enforce return-to-office (RTO) policies, employee resistance remains strong. A peer-reviewed survey by Hired found that 21% of software engineers would quit if forced to work full-time in an office, and 49% would start looking for a new job.

In response, employers are experimenting with strategies to entice software engineers back to the office, such as offering subsidized commuting, free meals, or enhanced office amenities. Some companies have even attempted controversial methods, like adjusting salaries based on remote vs. in-office status or making remote work a privilege earned through seniority. However, these incentives have had limited success, as many companies, including Dell, continue to see a strong preference for remote work.

The study also examines the implications of these new work models for both engineers and employers. For engineers, the flexibility of remote and hybrid work comes at the cost of fewer opportunities for in-person networking and mentorship, which are key to career growth and stronger team relationships. Meanwhile, employers face the challenge of adapting collaboration and communication processes while meeting the diverse needs of both remote and in-office employees. Additionally, employers with offices in higher-cost-of-living areas will face the need to pay higher salaries to their in-office employees, compared to remote workers from cheaper states. Those seeking to lower the workforce costs may need to establish offices in lower-cost areas, which comes with additional expenses like rent, utilities, and taxes.
