SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep 16, 2025--

A local favorite is rolling out with a brand-new name and a refreshed identity: introducing the Yolo Explorer, a train ride experience designed to slow life down and help riders rediscover Sacramento’s rich agricultural landscape, from the comfort of the rails.

Formerly known as the Refresher, the Yolo Explorer is more than just a train ride. It’s a moving window into California’s farming heritage, where fields of sunflowers, rows of walnut trees, and golden stretches of wheat create a backdrop unlike any other. As the train sways past patchworks of fertile farmland, passengers may spot lush tomato vines, rustic barns, or even the occasional tractor at work. Along the way, sparkling glimpses of the Sacramento River appear, framed by the distant silhouettes of the Coast Range. With each season, the scenery transforms: spring wildflowers, summer sunflowers, fall harvests, and winter’s serene landscapes. Every ride feels like a new adventure through the ever-changing beauty of Sacramento Valley. Guests can sip, snack, and savor the views on tracks that have been carrying passengers through the Sacramento Valley since 1911.

“We wanted to give the experience a new identity that captures the spirit of discovery and exploration,” said Alicia Carpenter, Assistant General Manager of the River Fox Train. “The Yolo Explorer invites guests to step away from the everyday and enjoy a journey that feels both timeless and uniquely local.”

Onboard, guests can choose between two 1.5- to 2-hour experiences:

  • Golden Fox: Assigned seating with tableside service, a sparkling welcome drink in a keepsake flute, and full access to explore the train.
  • Copper Fox: Open seating with the freedom to purchase drinks and snacks à la carte.

The Yolo Explorer runs through the heart of Yolo County, offering passengers an unforgettable blend of rustic charm and modern comfort. With open-air cars perfect for toasting the sunset or climate-controlled indoor seating, every ride feels like a mini-escape, right in Sacramento’s backyard.

River Fox Train

Built in 1911 by the Northern Electric Company, the River Fox Train’s 10-mile track originally transported passengers in the Sacramento area. Electric passenger travel ended in 1941, but the line remained active with diesel freight, creating a link between the fertile farmlands of the Sacramento Valley and the rest of California. In 2003, Sierra Railroad merged with the Yolo Shortline, continuing freight and reviving passenger trains under the name of Sacramento River Train. Today, the line is known as the River Fox Train, a sister of the world-famous Skunk Train built in 1885. From events like our Railbike rides; relaxing beer and wine trains; and holiday-themed outings, passengers can enjoy activities while reveling in nostalgic railroad charm.
