LONDON (AP) — Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell shared a 192-run opening stand as England scored 387-3 and beat India by 27 runs in a high-scoring third ODI at Lord's on Sunday to win the cricket series 2-1.

England and India piled up a jumbo-sized 747 runs between them as the visitors' defiant chase finished on 360-7, with Rohit Sharma scoring 138.

Duckett scored 141 in 135 deliveries and Bethell almost a run-a-ball 91. Cricket website Cricinfo said it was the highest England partnership, for any wicket, against India in men’s one-day internationals.

Joe Root again impressed with a 48-ball 74 not out and Jos Buttler needed only 13 balls for his undefeated 41, with four fours and three sixes, as England amassed the highest ODI total at Lord’s.

India openers Sharma and captain Shubman Gill (77) put on 147 just before the halfway stage of the innings, but the run rate proved too tough a challenge despite Virat Kohli scoring 74 in 60 balls, including three sixes.

England had not previously beaten India in a bilateral ODI series since 2018. England lost the opener at Edgbaston but bounced back in Cardiff, with Root's unbeaten 99.

England also won an earlier T20 series between the teams, 4-0.

Historic ton for Sharma

Sharma became the first India player to score an ODI hundred at Lord's in men's cricket — his 34th ton overall in the format — but he was bowled after England captain Harry Brook turned to Bethell to flip the momentum at 260-2 in the 39th over.

Sharma had strolled out amid speculation this could be his final match and a thick edge off Gus Atkinson was hardly a signal of intent, but the statement of consecutive fours off Josh Tongue followed before a trademark pull into the crowd welcomed Sam Curran.

Two wickets for Curran in the 44th over on his way to 4-75 made India's task even more difficult.

Boost for McCullum, records for Duckett and Root

Brook’s team made it five wins out of six white-ball matches this summer and provided a boost to head coach Brendon McCullum, who lost his test job this month.

Duckett's 141 was a new highest ODI men’s score at Lord’s after West Indies cricket great Viv Richards’ 138 in 1975.

Root’s reverse sweep for four took him beyond his own past record of 309 runs without being dismissed in ODIs.
